BEACON Expo 2024: Navigating the Future of the Philippine Blue Economy

The Blue Economy Annual Trade and Conference (BEACON Expo 2024) concluded successfully on October 2, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center in Manila. The event, held over three days, brought together key stakeholders from the maritime industry, government officials, and international partners.

The expo kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony led by Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan, who highlighted the critical importance of innovation in maritime transportation, naval defense, and renewable energy. This year’s gathering served as a crucial platform to exchange ideas, promote sustainable practices, and foster collaboration among various sectors involved in the blue economy.

On the second day of the expo, Undersecretary Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo of the Department of Energy graced the event as a guest speaker. He addressed the vital role of renewable energy in advancing the blue economy, emphasizing the need for sustainable energy solutions to support maritime industries. He outlined the government’s initiatives to foster clean energy adoption in the maritime sector, which is essential for reducing carbon footprints and promoting environmental sustainability.

During his keynote address, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized the need to modernize the Philippines’ defense capabilities, particularly within the maritime sector. He articulated a vision for a “true Blue Water Navy,” capable of protecting Filipino ships and enforcing international maritime laws.

“My vision for the navy is not focused on offensive operations but rather on the protection of our citizens and our maritime environment,” Teodoro stated. His remarks underscored the urgency of enhancing naval strength amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where incidents involving foreign maritime forces have raised security concerns.

The expo featured various breakout sessions, including “Plotting the Course for a Blue Economy,”  “Charting a Clean Course, Safely Sailing Together,” and “Naval Defense and Maritime Security and the Blue Economy: Interconnected Challenges and Opportunities.” These discussions delved into the relationship between security and economic prosperity, aiming to identify strategies for sustainable growth in the blue economy.

Several exhibitors showcased innovative maritime technologies and practices, reflecting the commitment of stakeholders to advancing the Philippine maritime sector. The event highlighted the importance of fair economic practices and securing foreign direct investments to bolster local industries.

The participation of international partners further enriched the dialogues, with a focus on collaborative initiatives to tackle the challenges facing the blue economy. Keynote speakers and panelists shared insights on best practices, sustainable development, and the significance of protecting marine ecosystems.

On the fourth day of the event, October 3, 2024, the expo transitioned to the Manila Yacht Club for a networking and awarding day. Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco joined officials and stakeholders from the travel and maritime transport industry, highlighting how the country’s maritime industry has significantly contributed to the local economy. She expressed her happiness at participating in the Blue Economy Annual Trade & Conference 2024 at the Manila Yacht Club and shared the Department of Tourism’s initiatives aimed at supporting marine tourism and the blue economy, including dive programs, a cruise tourism portfolio, and tourism infrastructure and innovation initiatives.

As the expo wrapped up, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and strategic direction for the future of the Philippine blue economy. The successful event not only reinforced the importance of maritime innovation and collaboration but also laid the groundwork for ongoing initiatives aimed at sustainable economic growth through effective maritime governance.

The BEACON Expo 2024 has set the stage for future dialogues and partnerships as the Philippines navigates its course towards a resilient and prosperous blue economy. With the political will to enhance maritime capabilities and a commitment to sustainability, the country is poised to harness the full potential of its vast ocean resources.
